Dry Needling
Physical therapists use dry needling to treat "knots" or trigger points in muscles that lead to pain and stiffness. When used with corrective exercises, dry needling can improve pain and reduce muscle tension.
The treatment uses a monofilament needle that is inserted into the muscle, through the skin, to stimulate a trigger point. Once in the muscle, the tightness in the muscle releases, which can feel like a twitch or mild cramping. After the needling is performed, you will be instructed through a few corrective exercises that will ensure the best outcome from the treatment.
What does it feel like?
Most people do not feel the insertion of the needle. During treatment, you may feel mild cramping, twitching or reproduction of your symptoms as tension is released.
Is it the same as acupuncture?
No! Dry needling is a Western medicine technique to address musculoskeletal diagnoses. The only similarity is the needle used.
Acupuncture is an Eastern medicinal practice the aims to improve Qi, the flow of energy in the body.
